Ideas for Using Rock in Your Landscaping
Landscaping rocks create depth and interest to any landscape. They bring in dimension and help with water conservation (a must here in Utah!). Small yards and large estates alike can benefit from beautiful rocks throughout their design. Here are a few updated ideas for eye-catching rock areas for your yard.
A Natural Look – Rocks bring a natural, warm feel that pairs well with Utah’s beautiful mountains. Pathways built with stones creates an adventurous, almost child-like joy to the yard. If you already have smooth concrete pathways, consider lining them with rocks to bring in some added interest and texture. Rocks surrounding flower beds and patios provide a natural warmth to the area that looks purposeful, artistic, and appealing.
Combine Plants and Rocks – Adding large boulders or small rocks to flower beds can be a beautiful visual addition to area. Asymmetry is a key component to modern gardening, and clean surfaces with a variety of plants mixed with different materials really delivers a dramatic effect. To keep from the area looking “messy” stick with just a couple of main features with purposeful punctuation marks.
Low Maintenance – Choosing a low maintenance product like rocks does not translate to lazy landscaping. Rock gardens are inspiration taken from nature that create an easy-to-manage space that always looks put together. Consider pairing these spaces with native plants and allow the area to thrive easily, without the need to intervene weekly with weeding and watering.
An Urban Vibe – Go for contrasting materials with gray or black rocks to create a modern and chic feel. Smooth, hard concrete surfaces tend to dominate urban landscapes, and pairing these surfaces with some dark, small rocks will look cool and chic. Townhomes with tiny yards and apartments with balconies or decks do well with this style because you can pack a big visual punch into a small space. Pointy grasses in containers are also good pairings for the urban design.
Create a Real River – If you’re creating a water feature in your home, consider bringing in river rock that looks like it was there before you even built the house. Your mini stream can feel nostalgic, like it’s a little piece of your property’s history. Plus, wildlife loves water features in yards because they provide a little spot for a drink or a bird bath throughout the hot summer.
Texture and Interest – Rock areas bring in so much texture to an area. You can mix river rocks or pebbles with flagstone or pavers to bring in a mix of contemporary and natural to your design. Pathways should be fairly smooth, but that doesn’t mean they need to be simply an asphalt or concrete pavement. You can mix large, flat stones with beautiful rocks to create safe, level paths while not foregoing on artistic appeal.
